Quick Fix for Lenovo Laptops with Dead Keyboard

Lenovo Laptop Keyboard Only Works Every Other Boot
After the recent 24H2 Windows 11 update we have seen a number of Lenovo laptops that appear to have developed a keyboard problem. The keyboard becomes unresponsive at startup. Reboot and it works fine – until the next reboot, when it is again unresponsive. The keyboard only works every other reboot. An annoying issue, to say the least. From what we have seen it effects numerous T-Series, Yoga, and X1 laptops with 8th and 9th generation Intel Core i5 and i7 processors running Windows 11 Professional.
To resolve the problem we tried a number of things, none of which worked:
- Uninstalled/Reinstalled various drivers in device manager
- Checked for hidden drivers that might be interfering
- Updated to latest Lenovo firmware
- Enabled/disabled various bios settings
- Reformatted and reinstalled Windows (Note, this worked – until the Windows updates were completed. then the problem returned).
The workaround
Finally, we stumbled upon a workaround posted in a Lenovo Support forum: Disable Windows Fast Startup.
- Open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options
- On the left, click “Choose what the power buttons do“

- Then click “Change settings that are currently unavailable“

- UNCHECK “Turn on fast startup”
- Click “Save changes”

Finally, restart. Your Lenovo laptop keyboard should now work every time your laptop restarts.
